Township of Langley

Township of Langley - The Township of Langley is known as the Birthplace of BC. First inhabited by First Nations people, now known as the Sto:lo. In the early 1800’s European fur traders of the Hudson Bay Company settled in the area now known as Fort Langley. In 1827, under the direction of James McMillan, Chief Trader of the Hudson’s Bay Company, these new settlers built the original “Fort”. Soon Fort Langley became a hub for farming, smithing and for shipping furs back to Europe. Learn more about Fort Langley.

The Township of Langley remained predominantly rural until the late 1960’s when Greater Vancouver experienced rapid growth. This rapid growth led to the establishment of the Agricultural Land Commission in an effort to protect prime farm land against development. Today much of the land in the Township of Langley remains within this “land freeze”. In 1979 the Township of Langley adopted The Township of Langley Official Community Plan. The Township is broken down into the following urban areas: Brookswood/ Fernridge, Aldergrove, Murrayville, Walnut Grove, Northwest Langley, Fort Langley, Willowbrook and the currently developing area of Willoughby.
